K&F INTERVIEW WITH MEGAN NICHOLS: BARBER APRONS

K&F: Tell us a little about yourself and your trade.
MN: I am a barber of 10 years. I had never planned on becoming a barber, but fate had its way and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I am married with a 4 year old daughter. Up until becoming a barber I was a bartender. It's a very similar job really multitasking, each movement with a purpose, and in the end making the consumer feel better about their selfies. I have a beautiful family and am so lucky to have partnered with Knife & Flag to open an amazing shop in Saint Louis, Union Barbershop.
Union is made up of an educated personable barber team that can handle every haircut and every hair texture. I educate every barber personally, and educating happens everyday! I also pride myself in being consistent about constantly educating myself as well. I don't think I will ever be perfect at everything that is barber g and that's what keeps it so fun and interesting! I love the art of barbering, the history of it and I look forward to coming to work everyday. I look forward to doing this for as long as possible!
K&F: What apron are you currently wearing and why was it the perfect mix of form and function?
MN: I have been wearing the non porous core apron exclusively for almost 3 years now!! It's the same apron and its looks next to new! I wear it 10 hours a day every day and I feel naked barbering without it! The fact that the hair slides off easy, It's lightweight and comfortable to wear. It is also easy to keep clean, and has pockets for convenience makes it the perfect apron where form meets function.
K&F: Out of all of your tools, which one is your favorite and why?
MN: As a barber my favorite tool is my straight razor. I can cut hair, detail, line up, and ....my favorite part of the job, straight razor shaves!
K&F: Who are some of your favorite fellow tradespersons to follow on social media?
MN: Social media has been a huge part of my success in building my large and loyal clientele. I love finding new talented barbers on Instagram...I look at IG daily. Additionally we have an amazingly talented and diverse team at Union. They are:

Honestly there are so many incredibly talented people in the industry, I could never name them all...however, I love the simplistic and clean work of Mikeyyyyyyy_.
K&F: If Knife & Flag were to add more to their lineup what would you suggest?
MN: For me Knife & Flag has made the perfect apron...I would love to see more things made out of the non porous material.,. I love that hair slides off so easily... it almost looks like leather... I'd kill for some non-porous "leather pants".
